Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is Utah’s largest college with the most diverse student body. As the only comprehensive community college in Utah, SLCC plays a critical role in the success of our community by providing access to higher education to thousands of new students every year whose goals are to transfer to 4-year universities or gain skills to advance in the workforce. Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Multicultural Student Success Coordinator will have an abiding concern for, and commitment to serving the diverse needs of the college community and its students with an emphasis on Asian and Asian American students. The coordinator will provide the campus community with opportunities to learn about and discuss social issues that focus on diversity, equity, social justice, and inclusion, with the goal of expanding multicultural awareness and responsiveness. Additionally, they will assist in efforts to advance an inclusive, and engaging learning environment for historically underrepresented students by providing culturally appropriate support, addressing personal, social or academic concerns, and offering guidance as needed.
The coordinator will seek to proactively help students navigate any roadblock they may encounter on their path to graduation. In doing so, they will have responsibilities in the areas of student development and engagement, multicultural educational programming, peer mentoring programs, organizational and fiscal management, and leadership development. The ideal candidate will be motivated to work independently as well as collaboratively with the Diversity and Multicultural Affairs team and other college departments as needed; promote innovative ideas on how to reach and engage underrepresented students; serve as a multicultural representative in departmental and institutional inclusivity efforts; collaborate with various SLCC departments, faculty, administrators and staff to create and maintain programs relevant to multicultural student access, retention and graduation; and review and share current research in higher education related to the access, retention and persistence of students of color and other underrepresented populations with an emphasis on Asian and Asian American student populations. Lastly, the coordinator will also maintain paper and electronic student files; ensure confidentiality of student records; help with analysis and reports that support the goals of the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and SLCC; and make appropriate referrals to counseling, academic advising, and other campus or community resources. This position is currently being offered as a part-time status, but may transition into full-time status contingent upon funding.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties
• Serve as a mentor, advocate and resource for multicultural students.
• Assist students in developing student success action plans in individual meetings
• Coordinate and collaborate with department/offices across the institution to identify resources that respond to multicultural students social, economic and educational needs.
• Advise, guide and support peer mentoring programs and student clubs aimed to support Asian and Asian American and multicultural students.
• In collaboration with others, support the planning and hosting of Multicultural high school conferences, and other outreach activities.
• Work with campus and community partners to develop, support and host motivational and educational activities, workshops, programs, or conferences, etc. that create a sense of community, celebrate culture/heritage authentically, enhance multicultural awareness and responsiveness, educate the college campus, and support multicultural student retention, persistence and graduation
• Provide the campus community with opportunities to learn about and discuss social issues that focus on diversity, equity, social justice, and inclusion, with the goal of expanding multicultural awareness and responsiveness
• Create and maintain programs relevant to multicultural student access, retention and graduation

• Collect both quantitative and qualitative data related to how underrepresented students progress and interact with SLCC’s campus climate.
• Evaluate and identify trends, recommendations or areas for improvement in the delivery of services to students.
• Keep abreast of best practices to enhance the persistence, retention, and success of multicultural students.
• Connect with Asian and Asian American community agencies and organizations to cultivate partnerships that support multicultural student access, retention and success.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education, educational psychology, sociology, communications, ethnic studies, or another related field.
Two-to-four years of full-time, direct paid professional experience. Candidates can trade education for experience at a 2:1 ratio (i.e., 2 years of post-baccalaureate education for 1 year of full-time experience).
Part-time experience may be substituted for full time on a prorated basis.

Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in a related field.
The ability to communicate in (Madarin, Malay, Hindi, etc.) language skills strongly preferred with a keen awareness of the Asian and Asian American student experience.
Experience working in a higher education environment, particularly two-year schools.
Experience supervising part-time staff and student leaders.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Will be motivated to work independently as well as collaboratively with the Diversity and Multicultural Affairs team, other college departments as needed, and community partners
- Communicate effectively (in writing and verbally) with individuals with diverse cultures, cultural backgrounds and abilities
- Provide excellent customer service and when necessary provide one-on-one consultations.
- Determine the needs of underrepresented students and connect students to interventions or services to meet those needs
- Possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Outlook
- Be detail oriented and can multi-task, prioritize assignments, and carry projects to completion
- Have knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds, especially those populations that have been historically underrepresented in higher education
- Work a flexible schedule which may include mornings and/or evenings
- Advocate for all students with an emphasis on Asian and Asian American students
- Possess strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills
- Learn quickly, work well under pressure, and work ethically with confidential information
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
