Job Description

Wiley University, a distinguished Historically Black College/University (HBCU), seeks an enthusiastic Instructor of English for a full-time position dedicated to teaching undergraduate courses in English literature, pre-requisite English courses, and enhancing student learning experiences. The ideal candidate will have a passion for teaching within a liberal arts context, a commitment to fostering academic growth, and a willingness to support the department's goals. The Instructor of English will work closely with the Department Chair to align course objectives with the broader mission of the university, and report to the Dean of Education and Sciences.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate English courses, including pre-requisite English and writing lab courses, to support students' development in reading, writing, and critical thinking.
  • Employ innovative pedagogical approaches, technology-enhanced learning tools, and active learning strategies to effectively engage diverse student populations.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback on student writing assignments, essays, and research papers to facilitate academic improvement.
  • Develop course materials, syllabi, assignments, and assessments that align with departmental learning objectives and best practices in English instruction.
  • Incorporate writing process strategies, rhetorical principles, and grammar instruction into coursework to enhance students' writing and communication skills.
  • Offer individualized support and mentorship to students, addressing varied learning needs, language backgrounds, and writing abilities.
  • Facilitate workshops, study groups, and peer review sessions to foster collaborative learning and peer-to-peer support.
  • Collaborate with campus support services, such as tutoring centers and academic advising, to ensure comprehensive academic support for students.
  • Engage in professional development and research activities relevant to English education and liberal arts studies to remain current in the field.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in English, Applied Linguistics, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • A Doctoral degree preferred. 
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching English composition, writing-intensive, or developmental writing courses at the college or university level.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills for effective communication with students, colleagues, and support staff.
  • An understanding of and commitment to the mission of HBCUs and liberal arts education.
